Another great night at the Tennis Club and today started mixed doubles madness! But before we start...have to report about the conclusion of Greg James vs. Shane Dalton. These two finished the third set they were never able to finish Tuesday night to a case of sprinkles. (geeze!) Greg rushed to a 4-1 lead and was looking to close this out pretty fast. But Shane got a second wind and put up a good fight, before finally falling to Greg, 7-5. It was an almost great comeback! Mixed madness started tonight and first up were Patty Hensley and Warren Mosler taking on Natalie Nelson and some guy named Max. Now Warren made a good effort to play even though his racquet was "questionable"...did we all hear you had broken strings?! Patty tried to work the whole court, but Natalie and whats his name won the first set 6-1. Then...something snapped (and it wasn't Patty's nerve). Turns out Warren injured himself and they had to retire. I think it was HIS mind. Seriously...hope Warren heals fast as it was nice to see him on the court. Next up for Natalie and Max "whats his name", is #1 seeds Debbie Woodson and Michael Armendariz. Stamper dem also played against the new "IT COUPLE" of the tournament, the lovely Jeri Ferrante and Mario Aiello. Even their names sound like movie stars! The match saw some good serving by both Mario and Jeri and some great retrievals by Stampers, especially Sarah but the fab twosome took the match 6-3, 6-1. Probably the most engaging mixed match of the night was the Kuiper/Petievich showdown played out on court two. Kelly Kuipers and her son, former Willy Wonka cast member, Alec taking on the husband and wife duo of Sara and Mike Petievich. A VERY WELL played match ensued between the two teams with Alec whipping crosscourts at Sara, Kelly with great returns, Mike with booming serves, and Sara manuevering balls bast Kelly and Alec for clean winners. Lots of smiles on the court and believe it or not, no marriage counselors were needed after the Kuipers took out team Petievich by a score of 6-3, 7-5. Anton Kuipers was glad it only went to two sets. He played out every point upstairs and was so stressed, Ken Mashburn had to keep him supplied with a steady Heineken IV drip. Last up for the night was Carl Beckstedt and newcomer Dave Solusky who both belted and sliced, ran and retrieved, and played one heck of a match. Dave takes the match by very misleading scores of 6-4, 6-0...it was much closer in that second set! Tonight will be ONE EXCITING EVENING with the womens B singles continuing and then the most popular event of the tournament, Mixed doubles with both A and B teams playing it out. Combine this with the OKTOBERFEST appetizer challenge, $2 Heinekens and who knows what Joanie will be cooking up behind the bar. Last night were chocolate martinis! SEE YOU ALL THERE!
