BANG! Another fun night at the Tennis Club of St. Croix with some great action tonight. First up were the ladies. Kye Walker beat Rachel Motta 6-0, 6-3 with some really nice points...the match was closer than the score by all means. Adriene Seward, three match points down in the second set made a valiant comeback but lost a tiebrake to Sarah Stamper. Sarah wins 6-2, 7-5. Our littlest gun and #3 seed fought off Carole Lockwood with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. There was a LOT of running on the court in this match, with Carol fighting for every point...including a rush to the net that nearly took her out...but the near wipeout spurred her on to win the second set. A nice match ladies, but little gun Kim takes the match. Court 1 had the gals in black with Gabby Armstrong taking out Kat Lenhart by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Great to see Kat playing again and entering the tournament! Next up were the big guns including Big Al Baptiste taking on #1 B seed, big hitting Julien DiPersio. Youth prevailed this time with Julian winning a close fought match by a score of 6-4, 7-5. Next on court were the big guns...Mens A singles! Some great match ups and some great scores tonight for sure. Court 1 highlighted our own Club pro, Robert Nuscher taking on Junior Bannis, Court 2 gave us Shane Dalton and Greg James, court 3 showed us Carambola friends Jerry Adames and Carlos "Roddick in the HOUSE" Rojas and court 4, Kevin Motta and Andy Feldman. Vocal at times with shouts of "move your FEET!" by Robert, "Come on!" by Greg and Kevin, and from Carlos...well...it was something. We aren't really sure what it is he says...but you can always tell when he wins a point! For the record, Robert...Junior is a LEFTY! Kevin completed his match on 4, defeating Andy 6-4, 6-3. All three of the remaining matches were in a third set when the unspeakable happened...it started to sprinkle! Oh no! Sprinkles! Everyone evacuated the courts so fast you thought Immigration parked a van in Times Square. But...what is this? Over on court 4?! Caleb Phelps and Chad Cavan, who began their Mens B singles...playing it OUT! These real men were not afraid of a little rain! NO! They finished...with Caleb advancing with a 6-3, 6-3 win. At least we know one thing...A Men singles players may have been afraid of the rain, but they bellied up the bar in support of our great sponsor Bellows and did their best to dent our supply of $2 Heinekens! Stay tuned for the completion of these matches.
The much anticipated show down of Stamper vs Armendariz continues tomorrow morning at 7am at the Club for anyone crazy enough to come watch. You might want to...ESPN is supposed to be there. Or...America's Funniet Home Videos, I forgot which one...
