ITS A WRAP!

Under an absolute beautiful evening sky, play started at the Tennis Club...Day One! Tonight was singles play and the action was great and the support was vocal for sure! Parents, husbands, wives, tennis partners and others showed up to watch and support...and take advantage of the great drink specials. Some of us took advantage of the specials before the matches but thats another story. The day started with a womens B singles match that was originally slated for evening but they took advantage of the holiday and rescheduled themselves for morning action. They must have had an idea on what was ahead. Barbara Robbins defeated Patsy Knight in a...get this...FOUR HOUR MARATHON match! Yes...you heard right. I thought my last TSA check at the airport was long...I heard several members renewed their licenses in a shorter amount of time than this match! Kudos to these troupers...Ironwoman Barbara prevails 6-2, 6-7, 7-6. Someone get these ladies a drink next time you see them. Or an IV. Other ladies results: Susan Armstrong took on Patty Hensley and won by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Stephanie Harris defeated Joanie Kupfer 6-0, 6-3. Major kudos to Patty and Joanie for playing up and taking their licks with grace and a great attitude. In mens action, Carl Beckstedt succeeded over Donovan Hamm, 7-5, 6-1. Robby Stamper took on former partner Larry Kupfer and took him out with a score of 2 and 2. Good work Robby! Chad Caven took on late entry Hakeem Logie, who gave Chad a good run with Chad finally taking the match at 6-4, 6-3. In a hard fought first round match, Dave Solulsky beat Jason "We didn't know he played tennis!" Miller with a great score of 6-4, 7-6. Awesome to see new faces on these courts! Zach Armstrong put up a good fight but went down to Caleb Phelps, 6-3, 6-2. In a highly anticipated pairing, the last match of the evening took place between yours truly and the oompa loompa, Alec Kuipers. No more oompa loompa jokes...he manned up all right and played a great match. Dare I say, age (admitting that just bought me another session on the couch) and experience prevailed but Alec played great a game. Michael wins 6-3, 6-2. The crowd was vocal for his passes on me and for his quick legs and retrievals. I admit...it was a fun match to play and a pleasure to play with such a nice young man. And he didn't even get upset when I congratulated him on a good shot with a "Nice shot you little S***!" Believe me...it was said with great sincerity.
Tomorrow is more singles action with Womens B's and Mens A's and B's. Some great showdowns are on the bill. Come join in on the fun and check things out! Drink of the night...MARGARITAS by Joanie! I wonder if she tanked her match to spend more time behind the bar? She sure is having too much fun back there!
